If you are a true bookworm, every time you search for top books and best reading lists this book will pop up on your screen. What makes it so special? I did not know either as you probably do not know this either since you are reading this post. Two weeks ago,I began a journey to Maycomb,Alabama. Jean Louise Finch was my guide in this city where hatred and short mindedness were not uncommon. Set during the period of Great Depression which took the US by storm during the 1930s,economy was not its only problem. Struggling black people tried to fight for their rights and equality in court of law alongside corruption, embezzlement and rape being its main focus in this book. Jean Louise also referred to as "Scout" was not an ordinary girl. She lost her mother and does not have any memories regarding her,she grew up with her brother and father ("in a men's world"),having no friends and always being compared to other girls. While being in school, she always stood up for justice and protected the unprotected just like her father. Atticus,Jean and Jim's father, was a lawyer who protected and fought for the rights of wrongly accused black men, often called a nigger-lover. Atticus had to defend Tom Robinsson, who was accused for rape of a young girl. She was part of a tribe that was known for its crimes and bad reputation, but no one could do anything about them. After losing the case,Atticus was devastated. Not only was he threatened by the young girl's father,he had to fear about his children's lives. There was a strange neighbor nearby whom no one had seen and was referred to as mentally ill and unstable. But,Jean and Jim never knew that he would be the reason why they were still alive. After leaving a school play, they got attacked by that girl's father. Not only was he trying to revenge himself to Atticus,he was trying to hurt him by taking away the only thing he valued more than his family and career. His children. As a plot twist, that strange neighbor saved their lives and Jean was mad at herself. She was mad at herself because she mocked him, made jokes about him and try to hurt him while he in fact was the only reason she and her brother survived that night. While reading this plot you will think that is nothing special just like I did when I started it first. I tried to find the reason why it was so special but you will not realize its worth until the very ending. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and also adapted into a movie which got an Oscar in 1962. This book does not only teach you a lesson about US biased history but important things you need to keep in your mind for the rest of your days. One of the most beautiful quotes is "You never really understand a person until you consider from his point of view-until you climb in his skin and walk in it" and also "Before I can live with folks I have got to live with myself." This books is a treasure chest for a curious mind seeking for a thought-provoking and inspirational novel. Having insight into a racist society teaches you a lot about how you should not treat people differently only because they have a different skin color, religion or lifestyle. Being supportive of minority groups and believing in equality was like supporting Hitler's regime. In US they all judged Hitler for his racist views while in fact they did the same thing. Black people were not maybe slaves then but their societies killed them in a different way. Always accusing them of crimes, over working them and paying them less than it was enough for feeding a family. The most important things this book can teach is how to accept yourself and be proud of where you come from and who you are,to broaden your horizons, respect everyone's believes and traditions, not judging someone because of their sexuality, race or religion and how to stand up and voice yourself for the ones who have no voice. Having a seat at the table is important if you want to make change and if there is no seat left then create your own damn seat. Be supportive, inspiring and never give up on your visions for the future. Jean Louise maybe eight years old but she knows who she is and stays true to herself no matter what other people think of her. Atticus keeps raising his voice to protect and help those in need and that is exactly what you should do. Raise your voice. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature and never give up on your believes. So if you are thinking of a book that will be inspiring you cannot go wrong with this one!
