With the immigrant crisis flooding Europe, this book feels like the right read. I have witnessed a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to immigrants and their everyday struggles. A lot of judgement and stigma has been directed towards them withouting even knowing what is behind their coming. Their countries are at state of war, death, hunger and fear are just one of the things mentioned. We do not actually know with what kind of pain, fear and struggles they have been dealing with. The thought of gettig away and starting somewhere new was the only thing on their mind. A hopeful, probably better future. Maryam was not like the other girls. Born a bastard, she paid price for that even though she was not guilty for it. Her father visited her once a week because she and her mother lived far away from everyone's sight because her father could not let her, his mistake, ruin his repuation or business. Maryam waited for him on the day of her birthday. He never showed up because for her present she wished to live with him, his wives and children. Going downtown to his house, she never knew it would change the course of her life. After spending the night on the streets of Herat, she found her mother hanging from the tree when she came home. Suicide. All because of her. Her father would not let her live with him and the rest of his family so marrying Maryam was his last resort. Maryam was only fifteen. Rashid liked her from the moment he saw her. Maybe Maryam would have liked him too if he was not thirty years older or this was not forced on her. Rashid and her got along until the day she brought an orphan home. Her name was Leyla and she found her on the streets of their neighbourhood after an explosion. What she did not expect is that Rashid would marry her. Leyla came into her life by accident and took everything by storm. Maryam could not bear children, all her pregnancies ended up as miscarriages. Rashid loved Leyla because she was pregnant but he did not know that the child was not his. Years passed and Leyla had another child with Rashid. This time a son. She was never over the love of her life, Tarik, until one day he appeared again. Where they meant to be? Will Leyla end up with Tarik or stay in her unhappy marriage with Rashid? Grab your copy and find out! All of Hosseini's book leave a deep mark on your soul. After reading the "Kite Runner" I knew I would never be the same. Hosseini shows us another glance at Afghanistan and the immigrant crisis. The West shows us nothing but child marriages and depicition of muslims as terrorists. Under all that scheme and dirt lies a country in ruins, bloodshed and pain. We only see what is shown to us on the TV but we do not get to see the bigger picture, the real picture. People are scared to go to their jobs because they might get killed on the way, women are being put in prison for running away from their abusive husbands, thousands of children are becoming orphans each day because we refuse to take action. We get to see that being Muslim is not the problem but the problem lies in our standing by and watching everything fall apart. I think that "A Thousand Splendid Suns" gives us a raw, honest and jaw-dropping insight into the brutal reality that has been going on for years in Afghanistan. Being emphatic and considerate is not simply enough. You have to feel it through this book and you might think about it twice the next time you try to judge someone who is seeking happines and security in another country.
