‘These people aren’t just rich, they’re crazy rich.’ We all have been there. We all have been nervous about meetig our boyfriend's or girlfriend's family. Mostly, we stressed ourselves about every little thing. What we are going to say, wear and the way we are going to behave. Usually it would end up well. But, imagine meeting your partner's family for the first time and discovering they want to get rid of you without giving you a chance to show them who you are? Seems lunatic, irrational and unreasonable? Rachel Chu may not be the only one to whom this has happened. Rachel Chu always thought she knew everything about her boyfriend Nicholas Jang. It is true but with one exception. Nick was filthy rich. Going away to Singapore with Nick for the summer started out as being a wonderful idea but will end up as a huge disaster. Nick never told Rachel how rich, traditional and strict his family was. The moment his mother found out he is coming home with a girl, Eleanor wanted to know everything about her. Hiring a private investigator seemed like only the tip of the iceberg, a warm up and common thing to do when your children announce they have a girlfriend or boyfriend. There is nothing the rich like more than a luxurious wedding. Designer clothes, champagne and gossip. Rachel never knew being invited to such a wedding would cause her so much pain. Never did she expect to be bullied, harassed and ashamed in such a short notice by Nick's family and friends. These are the people who are supposed to be her in-laws, her new family but how? After finding out about Nick's turbulent past and meeting his ex-girlfriend Amanda, Rachel questions herself if she really knows her boyfriend. Looking for a quiet getaway just for the two of them, Nick stumbles upon his grandmother and mother who forbid him to marry Rachel or he will not be the heir to their fortune. Nick does not care about their fame or fortune but how will things end up for him and Rachel? Which dark secrets will be unveiled on a hot summer night in Malaysia? I have seen the movie before I read the book. To be honest, I did not even know there was a book until a while ago. Movie and book are two completely different things. In the movie they changed a lot while I think the book was so much better. It is fun, fresh and unlike anything I ever read before. Reading the vivid descriptions of Singapore, glam and gossip of the rich really makes you aware that everyone's worries and focus are set on completely different things. All the people in Nick's life are crazily rich but they are not alike. There so many humble and kind people whose money did not make them selfish and egocentric. They do not go around bragging about their fortune or spending millions of dollars in just one store. On the other hand, there are people whose focus is on designer clothes, posh lifestyles and private jets. They go around bragging about their investments, bank accounts and newly purchased furniture and clothes. We should not judge people by the amount of money they have in their pockets. Instead we should allow themselves to show us who they really are. When you notice on which thing their focus is you learn a lot about a person. Watch closely but do not be quick to judge. Everything is relative and does not have to be the way you thought it woud be.
