“What of Art? Recently I found out about the concept of dark academia and I absolutely feel in love with it. By definition it is "An aesthetic that is inspired by old and classic literature/philosophy, as well as themes of existentialism and death (essentially a knowledgeable, vintage emo). " Digging deeper about books revolving around it I found out about "The Picture of Dorian Gray" which I wanted to read for quite some time. This is Oscar Wilde's first and last novel probably because it was condemned and called out as inappropriate or scandalous at that time. Dorian Gray was in the spring of his youth. Handsome, charming, electrifying, capturing, glorious and glamorous. Everyone who met him was absolutely stunned by his appearance and presence. It felt like being in Apollo's presence. His light always shone on you. Basil was absolutely blown away by the boy's character and used him as an inspiration for his art. For weeks and dreadfully long hours, Dorian stood in his art studio while he painted him. It lasted until Basil painted a portrait of him which showed all Dorian's ravishing characteristics. They feared the portrait so much because it contained Basil's huge secret. Dorian hid it up in his attic and it has never been shown to the world. Dorian's so-called "perfect life" has come to an end. The love of his life kills herself and everything seems to be worse than the previous thing that happened to him. Basil did not know but it seemed like his portrait was hexed. It drove him mad until almost everyone in his presence started killing themselves. Dorian never knew his beauty was such a curse. One day he got up to the attic and saw his portrait. It seemed as if it was a mirror - a mirror of his soul. It was full of the faces the people who haunted him in his sleep, fear, hatred, disgust, sins, wrong doings and more than anything - regret for everything he has done. How could it come to such an end? "The Picture of Dorian Gray" was such an unbelievable discovery. Full of thought-provoking and beautifully said quotes it really captures your mind and makes you wonder has your way of thinking so far been so wrong? What if all your principles and teaching have been just a reflection of someone's imagination, what if it is all lies? If you are into Greek mythology, philosophy and vintage emo you cannot go wrong with this one. The thing that really got to me is the fact that every single deep conversation between the characters got me thinking for a moment. Seriously, never did I stop after reading a sentence and just thought about it for a while. I believe some people even changed their beliefs and principles after reading this book, it really gets to you. Dorian basically sells his soul to the devil because he was obsessed and scared to death with the thought of getting old and not being young as he was. His portrait was some sort of reminder how beautiful and young he looked but little did he know it will pay a huge price. He was both beautiful and damned. The story is not that much captivating but it only teaches us that our past may come to haunt us and everything we have done so far whether it is good or bad is going to determine in which direction our life is going to be our how our it may end. It is controversial I believe because it rejected religion, integrity and the idea of sins. Also I got some queer vibes and I believe that is one of the biggest reasons why the books was so scandalous and offensive. Our souls are mirrors and reflect everything we have done in our life.
