"That was what a best friend did: hold up a mirror and show you your heart." We have all heard about inspiring friendship stories like The Golden Trio in the Harry Potter series or The Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings series. Those stories not only inspire us but make us believe that we also one day can find friends who will be by our side no matter what. You may have found them but if not keep looking. Friends are family we choose. They not only take care and look out for us - they are our secret bearers, shoulders to cry on and an inexhaustible source of inspiration and understanding. The story follows Kathleen Mularkey and Tallulah Hart. Tallulah, or as she prefered it, "Tully" has had to learn to deal with abandonment since an early age. One day her mother went to get groceries and never came back. There have been many attempts of her mother coming back but she always failed so Tully stuck with her grandmother. Kate, on the contrary, has had the idyll family life. Living in a warm house, surrounded with family that loved and cared for her seems like she had it all but such a thing does not exist. Kate had no friends and had a hard time making any. Tully and Kate are polar opposites but somehow they found a way to each other and since then have been inseparable. Kate&Tully - The Girls from The Firefly Lane they liked to call themselves. No matter which obstacles came their way, they managed to get through it together and promised to be best friends forever no matter what. Tully moved away but they stayed in touch and wrote each other letters every week. They thought that was difficult but the next shock wave came - Tully's grandmother died. Where was she supposed to go? She had no known family that would take her in. Would her mother come back and take care of her? What if she left her again? Is a foster home the only option? But suddenly an unexpected door opened. Kate's family always saw Tully as a part of their own so they took her in. Tully was outgoing, charismatic and fearless while Kate was shy, insecure and worked in silence. Together they went to the same university. Tully wanted to conquer the world of journalism while Kate just was not sure is journalism really what she wanted or was it just Tully's dream that she followed. Tully was fueled with big dreams and so she took every oppurtunity that came her way to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a reporter. Real struggles came when Johnny, the boss who they worked for, started developing feelings for Tully while Kate was madly in love with him. Will Kate tell Tully about her feelings for Johnny or will she keep it a well hidden secret? Will Tully fall for Johnny's romantic side and risk her friendship with Kate for a possible novel-like love story with Johnny? Guess you got to pick up this page-turner and find out for youserlf! I had always been a firm believer that in order for two people to function together they had to have slight similarities with one another but this book and personal experiences proved me wrong. Kate and Tully could not have been more different but they managed to function with one another. One aspect of their friendship I personally found toxic and it's how Tully never apologized and waited for Kate to make the first step. I have always been more of a Kate but my dreams compare to the size of Tully's. Making friends and starting the conversation has never been my thing. Struggles in the boys deparment have not missed me either. Whenever I had a crush on someone they miraculously found my friends more attractive than me. But change is always around the corner so do not lose hope. The first chapters move at a steady pace without many emotions or excitement but the last ones are worth it I promise you. They left me sobbing and wishing that everyone could experience such wonderful, inspiring and uplifting friendship like theirs. Would I recommend this book? Yes. Would I recommend it to someone who is in need of some action, exciting adventures or cliffhnagers? No, this is more of a book you pick up and let yourself enjoy it without much thinking or anticipation. There is also a second book in this series which is called Fly Away. If I get my hands on it I will be writing a blog post on it too! Firefly Lane got a Netflix adaptation so if you liked this plot so far give the TV show a try. I have not watched it yet but I will try to catch a glimpse.
