Five Feet Apart: You will never be the same after reading this heart-warming teenage romance.12/29/2019 "I never understood the importance of touch. His touch... Until I could not have it",is my favorite quote from this book which may also be the best book I have read this year. Welcome to the world of Rachel's "Five Feet Apart". Stella Grant wishes to be an ordinary teenage girl. Get drunk on birthday parties, go on her senior trip to Cabu with her best friends, explore bookshops around the corner and be able to just live. But,there is one thing stopping her from doing all the things she wants - cystic fibrosis. It is a genetic disorder causing mucus to build up in your lungs. It also stops your growth process, weakens your immune system and keeps you away from doing all the fun things in life because your lungs have a capacity below 50%. If you are lucky, you will get a lung transplant and live up to your 30s. Stella's whole life was about going from hospital to hospital, trying out new drug trials, vaccination, treatments and praying to get new lungs when the times comes. Because CFers are susceptible to becaterial infections, their clothes and space have to be clean around the clock. Bacterial infections can be caused by saliva exchange which means no kissing. The situation gets even more dangerous if they get a bacterial infection from another CFer which may cause even death. Stella signs up for a new drug trial at Saint Grace's Hospital where she has been her whole life. She knows the medical nurses, every floor and especially where the NICU is. Her best friend Poe,who is also a CFer,is also there,Barb and Julie. Everything seems the same until she meets the gaze of Will Newman. He is new here because she knows all the CFers who go in and out of this hospital. Will is rebelious, artistic, dark and dangerous which is attractive to Stella although she tries to deny it. He refuses to take his treatments because he wants to go out there, travel the world and have fun while he still can. Stella,on the other hand lives for her treatments because her sister Abby died and she is the only thing keeping her parents sane. They are completely opposite but that is what causes sparks fly between them. Stella helps Will to take his meds regularly and on time, goes with him to the gym, lets him draw her and make fun of her because she makes a list for everything. They do all sorts of things together but always at six feet apart. Stella gets candid about her treatments,Abby and parents and realizes that she lived her whole life in fear of living, going out there, trying out new stuff. After everything life has taken from her,she decides to be a thief now. She steals one foot because the best thing that has happened to her can never be near her. "Five Feet Apart, are you in?" This book left me completely speechless. I swear,I will never be the same after reading this book. "Five Feet Apart" raises the awareness about CF and the people struggling with it. Stella and Will are innocent teenagers who had nothing but love for another but fate had other plans in mind. I think that we exist both as Stella and Will. We want to be careful, organized and sensible as Stella but also wild, couragious and free as Will. Stella is like the student everyone looks up to in school while Will is the one out living his life. They are the perfect example of two opposites attracting one another and they would be perfect if there was one thing left out. Cystic fibrosis. I loved the way Will loved Stella. Her every flaw and scar on her body, unconditionally and unapologetically. How he made her rebelious, love herself and actuallly live her life. Stella on the other hand, showed him what it means to be someone's something, reasonable and responsible. They completed and understood each other in ways no one else understood. There are no exact words to describe the amount of emotion that is captured in this book. Love,fear,hope... The thing that sparked my interest was the unique storyline because we never truly know who deals with what and how difficult it actually is,the cute teenage love story and the amount of courage and love which most adults do not even posses. We,as healthy individuals, underestimate the power of touch . Stella explained it so perfectly how the touch of a loved one is needed as much as air to breathe. We forget how much joy and happiness lays in a simple caress, hug or kiss. Kisses and touch are a way of expressing your emotions without using your words. So,the next time when you see your partner, appreciate the fact that you can hold their hand and put your lips on their cheek. Do not ever take your blessings for granted because someone would die just to be able to do what you do every day.
