Science fiction is the first genre I encountered with. My reading passion has always been directed towards it beginning with classics such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Vampire Academy, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson and The Mortal Instruments. Lord of the Rings has been on my sci-fi list for quite some time and this quarantine gave me the oppurtunity to finish off the series! In the world of Middle Earth there are elves, dwarves, men, orcs, wizards and hobbits. Rings were created for each to rule their land but there was only one that had the greatest power of them all. “Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.” Long time ago, Sauron ruled Middle Earth destroying everything that was in front of him with the ring. In a battle elves, dwarves and men united to end his cruel rule. They thought the ring was lost forever and hoped it would never return. A hobbit named Bilbo Baggins found it during one of his travels and hid it in the Shire. In the meantime Sauron hid for decades, gaining energy and allies, waiting for the perfect oppurtunity to attack. He needed only one thing - the ring and he knew exactly where it was and to whom it belonged. The story follows Frodo Baggins, at first sight an ordinary hobbit with an ordinary life. He is not yet aware of the journey that lies ahead of him. Bilbo Baggins left behind the ring and Frodo finds himself as the Ring Bearer with a task that is going to change his life completely. Travelling across Middle Earth he gains a wizard Gandalf, elf Legolas, dwarf Gimli, two men Aragorn and Boromir and three hobbits Sam, Merry and Pippin as companions. With them he forms the Fellowship of the Ring, the ones who swore to protect the Ring Bearer and help him destory the ring on Mount Doom in Mordor, the land of Shadows. Unusual friendships and alliances are formed across Middle Earth with the fear of Sauron's return. For the first time since the Dark Ages elves, dwarves, men, hobbits and ents are working together. Kingdoms who swore to be enemies fought alongside one another in battle. Frodo and Sam were parted from the Fellowship but their long journey to Mount Doom continued were they encountered numerous obstacles and unusual creatarues such as Smeagol. During the Dark Ages, Isildur brought Sauron to his knees and the prophecy says that only his true heir can save Middle Earth. Who is he and can they save their home before it is too late? The Lord of the Rings trilogy is completely different from all of the sci-fi books I have ever read. It has that dose of refreshment, uniqueness, joy, hope, tears and dreams like no other book. A compelling, touching and heartfelt journey alongside Frodo and his companions which will teach you a lot about friendship, trust, hope, sacrifice and doing the right thing. Frodo, Sam and Aragorn were for me the most inspiring characters in the whole trilogy. Their sense of loyalty, commitment and sacrifice blew me away. They understood that sometimes doing the right things does not require courage but rather sense of compassion. They knew how much was at stake and that they might not survive this journey but they would rather sacrifice their lives than live in a hopeless, joyless and unjust world. Plus, these books contain one of the best quotes I have ever read! Plus there are movies and they last long but they are totally worth it!
