Realism started during the 19th century, marking the age of a new perspective in philosophy, art, music and literature. It lasted about 6o years, from 1830-1890 and gave birth to some of humanity's greatest works. This new perspective is characterized with relistic views, opposite to idealism and romanticism. Realists value the raw, unbearing truth without all the slushy, idealistic romances and its details. They show us the real picture of the world, trying to show us what is out there. In literature, writers such as Fridrich Schiller and Fridrich Schelgel are the first ones to use the term "realism in poetry". Realism is the age when some of the world's most famous literature pieces were written. They became classics and loved til this day onward. Some of the greatest literature works are "Madam Bovary","Anna Karenina","Crime and Punishment","Great Expectations","The Red and the Black" and "Eugenie Grandet". Writers such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Elliot, Balzac, Dickens, Withman, Stendhal, Twain and many more made their way into history by creating some of the most memorable pieces the world has ever seen. Now I am going to list down some of the books I read that were written during Realism but were not written about before this post. Here we go first with: 1. ANNA KARENINA by Leo Tolstoy "All happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own away" is the beginning what is tought to be world's greatest novel ever written. Anna Karenina is not just any drama. It shows us the contemporary life in Russia, insight into the highest ranks of society, endless pain and suffering, chosing love over status. Although Tolstoy's main character is viewed as unmoral,it is one of the most memorable ones. Anna gives up her high-profile life, rank and notorious beauty for a man she fell in love with at first sight or should I say dance. The story follows the lives of characters which are somehow connected to Anna and show us the lies hiding behind the curtains. Tolstoy is thought to have written this book in order to give an answer to the question "What is history?" and his personal marital experinces were brought into this book. You will never be the same after reading this book. A major-motion picture was filmed after this novel starring Kiera Knightley in the main role as Anna Karenina. 2. THE RED AND THE BLACK by Stendhal This is where it all started, with this very novel. Julien is young, ambitious and determined. He wants to rise above everyone's expectations and leaves his low-class life as a carpenter's son. Julien wants to conquer the world and in the meantime captures the hearts of Madam de Renal and Mathilde. Soon he realizes that the only way to the top is to hypocrisy, deceit and self-interest. His lies caught up and cause him to commit a crime which will cause his devastation. This novel strated realism and was the very first one to represent society's real face filled with greed, hatred and corruption. It is a real picture of French society after the Fall of Waterloo, facing the consequnces after the French revolution and Napoleon's dictatorship.
