The novel kicks off with the story of Rodion Raskolnikov who was kicked out of university and was threatened to be kicked out of his apartment also because he had no money to pay the rent or his classes. He wanders the sreets and in a pub he finds out about an old woman whom a lot of people owed vast amounts of money due to high interests. He decides that the best solution was to kill her and free these people of their debt and maybe he could steal all her money to pay his rent and classes in university. With a hidden axe bellow his jacket he comes to her door begging her to lend him some money and when she turnes around he hits her with that axe on the top of her head. In that instant momet her sister arrives and witnesses such a crime. While he did not came in for her,he murdered her too afraid of being turned into the police and spending his remaining days behind bars. Some voices are heard outside of the door and he collects her most valuable pieces and forgets the money. He manages to escape without being caught and hides that money beneath a rock in the outskirsts of the city. From that day he becomes delusional,irrational and his behaviour maddening. He never felt secue between his four walls,always feeling like he was watched and that everyone was waiting to arrest him. Wandering the streets he felt like everyone was staring at him while knowing the terrible crime he commited. The trouble continues when his mother sends him a letter telling him that his sister is engaged to a well-known and respected politician who is very rich. They both found the solution to all of their financial problems if Dunya,his sister,marries him. Raskolnikov went berserk and started to act even more odd. When they came into town,his friend Razumikhin falls for his sister. She calls off her engagment and sticks by her brother to help him with his illness because everyone was getting worried about him and his perplexing behaviour. After everyone was somehow investigating the cime,he felt like they were about to come and get him any second. He was not able to sleep at night or take a walk peacefully. He felt like they were always around the corner waiting for him to make a mistake and uncover his deepest secret. Raskolnikov falls for Sonya,an orphan whom he helped to organize a funeral for her dad. He admitts he has blood on his hands and surprisingly she did not back off because she had fallen for him a long time ago. After being sure that his actions and behaviour had no sense,he wanted to be set free and came to turn himself in. After being sent to a prison in Syberia,he recalled what he did and started to become a better person while being sure that his soul needed redemption. Sonya was by his side and came to visit him whenever she could,there was no doubt about his love for her and vice versa. Russian literature was never known for being easy to understand,so neither is this one. One of the most renowned novels of the 19th century,this is a classic that must be found on your reading list. Dostoevsky is the kind of author that forces you to rethink his characters' actions and moral compasses. This novel gives you an insight into the mind of the criminal,a murderer,his thoughts,struggles and deepest secrets. From being a pure soul to becoming a cold-blooded killer,this was not an easy transition for Raskolnikov and we can feel his maddening becomeing worse from chapter to chapter. We get to feel his fear,regret and at the ending his soul being set free. Raskolnikov makes us think and ask ourselves would we do the same thing if we were in such a situation? Would we be able to leave our moral guidance and commit such a crime? Would we be able to forgive ourselves and find joy again in life? Would our life ever get a purpose again? These are the kind of questions Dostoevsky makes us ask ourselves while giving us insight in his most famous character. As thought-provoking as it is,this is the kind of novel you would read when you are concentrated and mature enough to understand. So if you want to read this book,make sure that you are not sleep but well-rested,with a cup of tea and silence as your companions.
