Jozef K. is the protagonist of this classic and historic novel. Waking up like every morning with breakfast at his table from Mrs Grubach, one morning he wakes up to a completely different picture. Two men are standing by his bed and telling him that he is arrested. For a crime he did not even know which one it was but he was pretty sure that he did no harm to anybody. They tell him to come to the courtroom and leave without giving any other information. Which courtroom? Where is it? How will he find it? When should he be there? No specifics. He marches into a poor part of the city. The people one the street tell him that they are waiting for him. When he finally finds the courtoom they accuse him of being late to his own trail and say to him that he should come back next week. With no specific date or time. The story follows the involment of his uncle who finds a corrupt friend-lawyer. He does not seem to be interested in Jozef's case. He takes the matter into his own hands and starts finding out how to deal with the trial. He deals with the lawyer's mistress Leni, the painter Toricelli who advise him how to win the case and be freed. throughout the whole story, whoever he asked knew about his trial already and told him that the odds were not in his favor after all. Everyone seems to know everything about him while he has not got a clue what is actually going on. Everyone assures him that he commited a crime but he is not sure what crime. They convince him so much that he doubts himself and believes they every single word. A priest at the church tells him a story which reveals that his life has come to an end. The next morning,on his 31st birthday and a year long trial,he is taken by the guards to outskirsts of the city. His head is layed on a rock and they stab him with a knife. On his dying breath he said:"Like a dog" which refers to him being killed and treated like a dog. This book is refered to as a classic and must read during a lifetime of a true bookworm. It is believed to be one of the most important books of the 20th century. It was heavily influenced by Dostoyevsky and his works such as Crime and Punishent and The Brothers Karamazov. Kafka's whole life was a tragedy and full of despair. During World War II his family was taken to Auschwitz while he remained in Prague. Although he was wealthy, the wound of lossing his family never healed and maybe this is how such dark-themed novels of his came to life. This whole trial and Jozef's confusion was a metaphore on how today's society judges our every step. This trial did not have a name, location, date or even a hearing because that is how it works in real life. The courtroom is the metaphore for our life. There is no location or time of the hearing because you are judged and condemned anywhere at any time. The trial did not have an ending because in real life it never ends. Jozef is the representation of every single one of us. We are being judged for something we have done, wheter it is good or bad. People assured him that his case was lost and that his crimes were terrible but no one ever told him what his crime actually was. But why? Because our society wants you to doubt yourself and feeds with your self-doubt and low confidence. His death represents the final step-the society completely destroys our self-esteem and individualism. Maybe this seems too harsh but this is how I understood the book. When I wanted to find out what other people though of it,everything that I was able to find is the plot description or recommendation. So if you have read this book,I would love to hear your opinions and how you understood it.
