Hello everyone! Ahh,it has been such a long time since I uploaded a blog post. The reason for not posting is that I started medical school and finding time to write blogs or even read has become extremely challenging. I guess my posting will not be a set date because I will from now on only be posting during breaks from exams or holidays. I am ashamed to say that this is the first book I read in a while but that is just the way it is going to be for the next few years. Withouth further due let's dive right in in the world of Greek mythology. I have had a passion for Greek mythology since middle school. I remember the first time I heared about Olympus and the gods, Hercules, Achillies and the Titans. Greek mythology has always represented a treasure chest for literary fanatics and authors. I truly believe its mark will never be erased. Its impact on modern literature and history is tremendous. Circe follows the story of Circe, the daughter of Helios god of Sun. He is a Titan and Titans rulled before the Olympians. Cronos ate his children and Zeus put an end to his ferocious appetite. He is set in the dephts of Tartarus. Zeus rose to power with his brothers and sisters. He allowed the Titans to live with them as long as they obeyed his will. Helios had many children with various nymphs and one of them was Circe. She was nothing like his other children looking a lot like the mortals they dispised and without any talents or powers. Perceived as useless she one day discovered her call - witchcraft. With her emotions and a few leaves she was able to transform her mortal interest into a God and her enemy Skylla into a monster. For that she was punished and sent to a deserted island for eternity not because her acts were punishable but because they feared her power which they did not understand. Although many of her kind would not be able to stand to be far away from the luxury, gossip and company she found it therapeutic. Spending her time on making potions and discovering various spells is how she kept herself busy. Even though she was a goddess she dispised that part of herself. Many visitors came and went but no one of them were memorable until the one arrived. Odyssey captured her heart at first glance. Looking for shelter after fleeing from the Trojan war he never imagined he would be spending so many years off shore. All of his ships sunk except one and a few people from his crew remained. Never did he imagine that on this island he would find solace and love but there was always emptiness in his heart - he was not built to be trapped in one place without purpose and conquests. He set sail to his kingdom of Ithaka were his son Telemah and wife Penelope were waiting for him. Little did he know that Circe was not left alone on the island. She named him Telegon and he was in grave danger since his time in the womb. Gods did not want for him to be born but Circe's devotion was stronger than any threat they sent. Never did she imagine that after all the fury from Gods he would be their chosen one and sent to a kingdom in Italy where Aeneas built his own. What happened with Circe? Did she ever find love again? Gues you will have to pick up this book and find out for yourself! Honestly, I cannot recall if I heared about Circe before so when I found about this book I did not know what it was about in the first place. Circe was a different character you could sense it from the very beginning. She was not loved by her parents or looked like she was a Titan's daughter. Although she was immortal, being a nymph did not bring her many benefits. Nymphs were at the bottom of the immortality rank with no special powers or talents. In the beginning she kind of annoyed me but I felt sorry for all the misery and harsh treatment she had from her parents, brothers and sisters and other Titans. Just like Prometheus she had a weakness when it came to mortals. Gods needed mortals to adore and hail them but Circe was kind of jealous of their mortality. Even after death they would be reunited with their loved ones instead of being trapped in an endless circle. What really amazed me was the love she had for her son. It was very common for gods not to care about their children but Circe defined what a relationship between a parent and child should look like. Bringing her life in danger just to protect her son from the fury of the gods just left me speachless. The part I did not like about this book is not the way it is written or potrayed just the fact that greek mythology is full of incest. I do not how can you possibly justify marrying your sister or being with the son of your lover who is also your son's father. It is just gross and those aspects I did not like but it had nothing to do with the book. It is just the way greek mythology is and the author cannot change the relations between the characters.
