Jay Gatz had a very unfortunate life. Being born into a poor family who barely made ends meet,he pictured his life differently. Joining the army was fate's game of bringing him closer to the woman of his dreams. In Louisville he met Daisy, who captured his heart at first sight. Dasiy came from an affluent family, spending money and living her best life as if there was no tomorrow. Jay and Daisy fell in love each day more and more but her parents did not let her marry him because he was too poor and was not able to fulfill her needs. Later Jay was sent to army and promised Daisy that he would come back for her. He was smart and cunning and gained higher and higher ranks in the army. After the end of war he was sent to Oxford and Daisy never understood why he did not come back. With the remaining money,he left and came back to the US to look for Daisy. Little did he know but Daisy married Tom Buchanan, member of the local aristocracy and most eligable bachelor in the West. His heart belonged only to her and so he promised himself to find her. But firstly,he had to earn money and that is how he encountered Dan Cody. Cody showed him the way to fame and fortune. He changed his name into Jay Gatsby and so Jay Getz was gone forever. After five years he bought a mansion across Daisy's and organized oppulent parties with guests all from New York only to lure her into his arms again. She never appeared but that did not stop him. Fate brought him Nick Carrawey who studied with Tom Buchanan at Harvard and was one of Daisy's close relatives. Nick received an invitation to Gatsby's party. No one has ever seen Gastby let alone received an invitation from him. Gatsby was very fond of his new neighbour and so he begged him to invite Daisy to his place so he could see her. After that tea party,Gatsby and Daisy were inseparable. Daisy was blown away with his mansion and fortune. They were falling for each other again and it seemed like they never stopped loving one another. One day Gatsby was invited over to Tom and Daisy's place for lunch. Tom was very suspicious of Gastby and how much time his wife spent with him. He noticed that she was falling for him and that caught him unprepared. Both his wife and mistress were slipping away. After a qucik drive to the city, everything was said and done. Daisy told Tom the truth about her and Gatsby's affair. Their reckless driving cost Tom's mistress her life and the odds were never in Gatsby's favor again. Wanting to protect Daisy's life he never assumed it would cost him his own. Tom spilled the beans to Wilson (the husband of his mistress) and so he prepared himself for revenge. Driving to the West Egg,Wilson made up his mind and decided to take both his and Gatsby's life. Nick was devastated by the news and by the time he informed Daisy she ran away with Tom. That is how rich people solve their problems, they just bail and run away. Nick prepared Gatsby's funeral and no one arrived to it except Jay's father. Eeveryone loved and praised Gatsby, claiming they were his friends but he died a very lonely man with no one by his side excpet Nick and his father. The West Egg was never the same place again after Gatsby's death and so Nick moved away with the memory of a man who was the closest thing he had of a friend. The Great Gastby is a novel about romance, lies, fame, fortune and adultery. It shows insight into the early 1920s and America's recovery after the WWI. It is a representation of how poor people made their way to the top-by doing illicit jobs and smuggling. It was a way of survival, you had to play dirty or you were out of the game. Jay Gatsby played his cards well . He represents every individual's aspirations :wishing for better oppurtunities for themselves and their loved ones. Love makes us do a lot of things but most importantly it can be our inspiration. Jay's love for Daisy made him move mountains, accomplish the impossible and do bizzare things. He loved her too much and she loved him to little. When things got hard she bailed on him and run away. Love is not a one-way street and in order for it to work both partners have to put time and effort into it. A relationship is a resposibility-you are responsible of someone's heart. Sometimes two people are not just made one for another no matter how much they love each other. Some love stories are not meant to be. Sometimes people chose the ones who are more conveniet for them-like Daisy did with Tom. She chose him because she knew that he would never leave her because of their daughter. Although Jay makes us believe that we can still love someone no matter the circumstances and distance,Nick is a more realistic character. He taught us how to be careful, who to trust, when to back off and when to keep going. I felt like he was underrated altough he was the narrator of this novel. He made his way through life honestly and respectfully and that is the reason why I really liked him as a character. I liked the old Hollywood glam in the 1920s but one thing that shocked me is how Americans looked down on people belonging to a differet race. The topic of mixing different races reminded me of "To Kill a Mocking Bird" and how it was a very difficult time for people of color. This novel discusses a different variety of topics but if you want to read a different kind of love story and dive into the 20s you can enjoy this one for sure!
