“Lot of times love doesn’t work out. Yet even when it fails, it connects you to others and, in the end, that is all you have, the connections.” Combining abandonment, murder, survival and love in a way you have never read before. Without doubt, this is one of the best books I have read so far. It is not what you expect it to be. Kya also known as "The Marsh Girl" has been subjected to relentless criticism and racism her whole life. Labeled as wierd and dangerous, most of her life was spent in the marsh where she found solace. Her home was not a safe haven either, as one would expect. Having an alcoholic as a father has not been quite easy on her or other family members. Abuse, screams, shouting, cursing and pain are the only things she knew about. First her siblings and then her mother left. All in search of a better life. Kya was left alone with her abusive father at the age of seven. Since then her life has been on survival mode. On most days her father did not come home and when he did, then usually penniless. Being yelled at when she did not cook supper or wash clothes was a staple at their household. Who could blame her for not knowing? On her first day to school she was laughed at for being different and not knowing how to read. Promising herself to never go back, her education was postponed for a very long time until Tate came around. Being her tutor, Tate was one of the few people who did not avoid or laugh at her. Most of her life she felt excluded and discriminated but with Tate she could be herself. Brining her his old school books on biology, mathematics and chemistry, Kya had become more educated than the white girls from Barkley Cove. Their friendship eventually evolved into love over the years. The fairytale did not last for long because Tate had to leave for college. Kya never forgave him for leaving her and never coming back to say goodbye. Another person she loved and trusted left her. How could she ever let somebody in her life again? She chose to only trust herself but life has its way of messing up your plans. A dark, broad-shouldered and desired young man entered her life by the name Chase Andrews. Things seem to have been doing good in Kya's life until one day Chase's body is found in the fire tower and she is accused of first degree murder. Did she murder him? What was her motive? Was she wrongfuly accused and the real murdered vanished into thin air? Woah. This book has made me feel so many emotions at the same time. On some pages I felt horrified, on the other hopeful and on some touched to tears. I am absolutely disgusted by the racism Kya endured. Not only did she have a rough childhood, most of her life too is fulfilled with pain, abandonment and rejection. Life has not been easy on her and she needed to learn how to live on her own. I am absolutely amazed by her cunning and brave spirit. Not once did she give up, she always came stronger. Her will to learn and study the marsh, its habitat and creatures surrounding it really showed me that everyone has a purpose in their life and that was hers. Finding your own way is not easy and there is not a magical formula that shows you what to do with your life but one thing I know for sure is that it will fulfill you in a way that cannot be described. It is true that passion and love do not pay the bills and I completely agree with that but living a modest yet fulfilled life is way better than being rich and unhappy. This book is set to get a movie adaptation in 2022 produced by Reese Witherspoon.
