“Once a story you’ve regarded as true has turned false, you begin suspecting all stories.” The highly anticipated sequel to "The Handmaid's Tale" finally got into my hands. I have waited for the price point to drop because it was kind of expensive when it first came out. I am really glad I got my hands on this jem and without any further due let's dive right into it! This book is written based on the experiences of three women. Aunt Lydia, Agnes and Daisy. All three of them describe how their life was like in Gilead. Aunt Lydia is one of the founding Aunts of Gilead. Ruthless, sharp-minded and cunning, she is feared by everyone. Agnes is born into a Commander's family and that earned her a privileged life and high status in society. She could always expect the best schools and treatment no matter where she goes. Daisy lived in Canada but she had an unknown connection with Gilead and will play a huge deal in its downfall. In both Gilead and Canada everyone speaks of Little Nicole, a girl who fled Gilead. Seen as a symbol of hope and resistance, Daisy never knew she was that little girl everyone talked about. Gilead's citizens started fleeing the country to Canada or Texas in search for a better life. Mayday, an organisation conspiring against Gilead, smuggled people out of the country. Aunt Lydia and Commander Judd tried to stop the mass immigration but were rather unsuccessful. How to stop the downfall of Gilead or is it inevitable? This book is such a page-turner. "The Handmaid's Tale" was great but I felt like it took me a lot of time to understand what was happening and getting to know Gilead's social hierarchy. "The Testaments" on the other hand I enjoyed more because I already knew the concept and how things worked. Also, I feel like it was more interesting due to the fact that it followed three different stories and getting to know the connections between those three. Both the stroryline and end are not predictable so finishing every chapter feels like a you are left with a cliffhanger. It was better than I expected it to be and Atwood completely blew us away in my opinion. Many authors who promise a sequal years after the first book's release usually lose connection with the characters and story and it turns out to be a huge disappointment. Atwood, in my humble opinion, did a great job and did not disappoint. Her work deserves more recognition and I hope her talent will be more appreciated and talked about.
