Mental health has become the center of gravity when it comes to YA novels. Novels such as "All the Bright Places" and "Perks of Being a Wallflower" emphasize the importance of a healthy being and surrounding. "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" exactly points out how difficult it is to lead a normal, happy and healthy life when you do not overcome your fears from the past. Eleanor Oliphant is socially awkward and not really physically attractive. She is 30 years old and still without friends or a boyfriend. The only human being she has contact with is her mother via phone call every Wednesday. Everyone seems to be judging her at first sight but no one knows the dark secrets and past she is hiding underneath that veil of unapproachable-ness. Raymond is on the other hand different. He is fun, kind and polite but not exactly what Eleanor is looking for. One day after fixing her computer at work she realizes he is not that knowledgeable or literate as she would like him to be as a companion. Saving Sammy's life after an unexpected heart attack brought them together again. Like it or not, she became really fond of his company. She had no clue Raymond would be the one who would end her ties with the past. Eleanor has changed her identity and moved to another city. She is alone, shy and insecure. But why? After an alcoholic overdose, she finds comfort in his company and that is when all the curtains come falling down. 20 years ago her mother wanted to get rid of her and her little sister by setting their house on fire while the two of them were sleeping. Her sister did not make it and Eleanor is still haunted by the ghost of her mother even though she is stuck in prison. That is not the only trauma her mother caused her. They always had to practice their speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary. Greatness was expected of them but none of them met her criteria. Never to talk too much, to eat too much or to feel too much. Eleanor is visiting a psychiatrist and is on the road to recovery. Will she make it? Will Raymond's support and encouragement be enough? Will she cut ties with her toxic mother? Personally, I expected more of this book. Reading the reviews and ratings before buying it promised so much more. I feel like the book is unfinished. So much was focused on her fangirling and stalking which actually made it really funny but the real story line suffered. The focus should have been on her road to recovery, finding out her past and bonding with Raymond. I feel like the most important parts were left out although they should have been crucial. The author tried to pack everything into the last 10 pages although it should have stretched out throughout the entire book. The book is really funny and entertaining but something is missing in it. Every girl who is new into make up and shopping trendy clothes can for sure relate with Eleanor. Reading it should only make you more aware of the fact how the fears and damages we do not overcome will be a baggage to us forever. Have you read the book? How do you feel about it?
