“Because it was all you were willing to give me. And I’d rather have you hating me than not have you at all.” You love enemies-to-lovers, spicy but also heartfelt books? This one is for you. "The Spanish Love Deception" is Armas' debut novel which was chosen as the Best Romance and Best Debut Novel of 2021 by Goodreads. As a person who is rather easily influenced by Bookstagram and Booktok, no wonder this book found a way to me. Catalina Martin is an accomplished, young woman who fled her home country two years ago to start a new life in the States. Fleeing Spain was a way to escape the constant pitty from her family, friends and neighbours after breaking up with her boyfriend. No matter how much time passed, Lina never got lucky in love again. She went on dates but it never ended in something permanent. As if the situation could not get anymore difficult, her sister's wedding was around the corner. In two weeks she should be in Spain but she had no date. Arriving alone was not an option since she wanted to avoid worrying her parents. She had exactly two weeks to find a fake boyfriend who would fly to Spain with her for the weekend but how and where could she find him? She had no idea where to start. Maybe she should ask someone from work. That would be easy but Aaron Blackford was out of the question - mortal enemy number one. Overhearing her during lunch the other day, Aaron found a way both of them could benefit from this situation. Aaron needed a fake date for an auction and Lina needed a fake date for the wedding. Perfect. In his mind it was all settled but Lina would not hear about it. Persuasion was his talent and eventually Lina gave in. What if suddenly Aaron showed her a side of him she could not possible resist? What if she uncondiotionally, irrevocably falls in love for him? Will he fall? What if he does not? How will that change their work relationship? Will they ever be the same after this trip? Ahh, how I enjoyed this book. Trully. Enemies-to-lovers is probably my favorite kind of trope. I have read friends-to-lovers but it is not the same. I love how in enemies-to-lovers the tension builds, how they do not know how they got into that situation and when they realise that they cannot live without each other. Ahh, hits me right in the feels every time. For a long time I thought that I needed to read different books. It feltfor a while like romance books were for teenagers and I should be reading something more serious. Do not get me wrong, I love reading a good classic but this time around it felt like pressure rather than a choice. In my mind romance needed to be left behind. After I realised that this is who I am. I love reading romance and there is nothing wrong in that. There is nothing to be ashamed of and there is nothing that needs to be grown out of. Reading should be enjoyed not forced upon. Same can be applied to music and movies. So this goes out to all of you who think that certain things need to be left behind just because you have aged. No. Get that book. Watch that movie. Listen to that song. Your taste should not change just because your age did. Back to my review, I got carried away a bit. It has got the right amount of spice in it if you are wondering. I really love the name Aaron and maybe it was not that hard to fall in love with Aaron Blackford. Aaron was kind of a Henry Cavil in my mind since Lina described him as a Greek god due to his physique. Everyone needs someone as caring and as thoughtful as Aaron. Simply put, everyone needs an Aaron Blackford in their lives. I feel like every young girl or woman can relate to Lina. Her insecurities, fears and intrusive thoughts are something every woman goes through. I really wish there would be a second part, where we could see how their romance evolved. But, even if we do not get the second part, in my mind they are happily sipping on wine every summer in northern Spain surrounded with friends and family that unconditionally love them.
