If you have been in the bookworm community for a while now, there is not the slightest chance that you have not heard of John Green. Capturing and breaking millions of readers' hearts, his name will be carved into the shiny stars for sure. So who is he actually and which is his debut novel? If you want to explore more about his biography, there is a post on my blog dedicated to the lives of the Green brothers. The link will be provided at the end of this post. Withouth further due,let us dive in Green's world of mesmerizing characters and inevitable but beautiful tragedies. Culver Creek. Boarding school. Historic pranks. No rats allowed. All these words describe the place at which Miles Halter found himself during his junior year. A place where he never thought to find so much joy and pain at the same time. Being the "new kid" was never easy, especially when you are shy, nerdy and when your most amazing talent is remembering bunch of last words from historic figures. But if you are lucky enough you will stumble upon other shy, antisocial nerds just like you. Chip,Takumi and Alaska are the names that Miles will remember til his dying breath. Culver Creek is not like any other school. You have Alaska,Takumi,Chip and Miles on one side and on the other the Weekday Warriors. Rich kids who belittle the poor, nerdy kids on scholarship. There was always a tension going on between them and they performed pranks as a form of attack. No matter on whom the prank was or what it was,no rats are allowed. Chip is the Colonel, the leader, the mastermind behind all the pranks and the smartest kid in Culver Creek. Takumi is a video game expert,an IT nerd and your ride or die. Alaska is a feminist, opposer of the patriarchal paradigm and the founder of the concept "life's library". Together the will perform historic and hilarious pranks while forming a friendship for life. Miles finds himself falling for the absolutely charming and charismatic Alaska. If she only knew how hopelessly in love with her he was. Miles knew he never stood a chance because she had a boyfriend whom she loved endlessly. In the meantime,he falls for a cute Romanian girl called Lara but some people are like parallel lines. Simply never meant to meet one another. Alaska is brave,a wild spirit, taking in every breath like its her last and that is what captures Miles' heart. A boy in need of getting out of his comfort zone. Given the task to answer the most important question one must ask themselves, they struggle but Alaska does not. How do we get of this labyrinth of suffering? Suffering has been her destinty. From losing her mother at an early age to being blamed by her dad for the death of her mother, she never quite escaped the endless pain and torture life brought on her. Instead she drowned herself in alcohol, cigarettes and sex to numb the pain and to escape reality. "You smoke to enjoy it,I smoke to die". Spending the 9th of January drunk kissing Miles and fantasizing about his body pressed against hers, she forgot the death anniversary of her mother. That drove her to madness and in all that pain, craziness and drunkenness she killed herself. It devastated everyone who cared a bit for her,but no one knew that this was her way out of the labyrinth. The thought of a Great Perhaps. I have heard of this book for a while but never thought of reading it until a few days ago. What an idiot I was. I was absolutely stunned by the characters' unusual but captivating personalities. From remembering something so strange as last words, creating the concept of a life's library and the thought of life as a labyrinth of suffering. My mind was blown away by the story line,it seems so boring and lame and then suddenly something so unexpected hits you. During the whole reading you never seem to discover Alaska's enigmatic personality and traits. She was the best character by far. Full of life but so full of pain. It just made me think of how we never know with what someone is dealing with, how much someone is suffering or struggling. Some people are just meant to teach us a lesson and inspire us to do better. Alaska inspired a whole generation on Culver Creek. She may have ratted or killed herself but she was memorable for so many things. "It does not matter what someone is born but what they choose to be",is a quote that very much describes Alaska. She loved endlessly, helped gladly and lived bravely. She was the girl everyone turned to when she spoke, made the room completely quiet and captured your heart at first sight. Maybe she had a lot of flaws, everyone has but her legacy lives on. I am just sad she never got to finish her life's library or ended up with Miles, they would have made each other very happy. If you have not read this book, then what are you even doing with your life?
